With the news today that Geelong’s Mathew Stokes was granted bail after facing Geelong Magistrates Court charged with trafficking and possessing cocaine, we thought it might be worth checking the current odds being offered on Stokes for the Brownlow.
For a star AFL player, this sort of indiscretion might warrant a suspension by the club and would therefore directly impact the player’s Brownlow chances.
Geelong Cats chief executive Brian Cook says the club is disappointed by the situation and that Stokes will be stood down.
“Given the gravity of the charges the club has decided that Mathew will be stood down from all club activity as we attempt to gather all the facts in this matter,” Geelong CEO Brian Cook said in a statement.
“This is not a rush to judgement but a reflection on the seriousness of the situation. It is important for Mathew that he deals with legal issues at hand as his first priority.
“As we have in the past, the club will not rush to formulate a long term determination of any penalty.
“Mathew is obviously very upset by what has happened and we will give him a little time to gather his thoughts and then we will sit down with him and work through the situation.”
Currently Centrebet is offering Stokes at $1201 to win the 2010 Brownlow Medal, so even with him being stood down, and with the possibility of him missing matches, it’s unlikely his odds will push out any further from there.
