Coleman Medal – Jack Riewoldt or Barry Hall

When we posted back in June about whether Jack Riewoldt could win the Coleman Medal, little did we know that with one round to go in the AFL Season, Riewoldt would be sitting on top of the goal kicker’s tally board as the clear favourite.

Right now Riewoldt has 75 goals for the season, followed by Barry Hall with 69 goals. Mark Lecras is third with 62 goals.

As an outside chance Barry Hall is still being offered at $8 for the Coleman Medal. Who knows, can Barry kick 7 goals in round 22 while Jack Riewoldt doesn’t kick any?…

Can Jack Riewoldt win the Coleman Medal

At the start of the season Jack Riewoldt was paying around $125 to win the 2010 Coleman Medal and to be honest, you’d had to have been a pretty die-hard tigers fan to put money on him then and given him a chance. Fast-forward to Round 12 and Jack Riewoldt is currently sitting equal 4th on the AFL Goal kicking table with Jonathan brown and his odds have shortened to $11.

So can Jack Riewoldt win the Coleman Medal? Let’s find out…

Yes
Riewoldt can win the Coleman medal in 2010 and here’s why.

First up, in the post-Richo days, Riewoldt is now the Tiger’s only forward option. If you look at the goal kicking list Richmond doesn’t have another player in the top 50. After Jack Riewoldt the next Tiger’s player is Nahas with just 10 goals. Which means Jack is going to get the bulk of the Tiger’s shots on goal for the entire season. So far he’s had 57 shots at goal, which is more than Jonathan Brown and only 3 less than league leader Matthew Pavlich. With so few forward options for the tiger’s, a team who are unlikely to change their game-plan, you can’t see Jack Riewoldt getting less shots on goal as the season continues, if anything his shots per game will increase.

Secondly Riewoldt’s coversion percentage at 61% isn’t great yet he’s still ranked 4th in goals for the season. If he can bring that percentage up another 5% to match the best goal kickers in the AFL then he’ll be challenging for top spot. Even against a defensive team like St Kilda in Round 11, Jack Riewoldt managed to kick six goals. But he also kicked 3 behinds which means he could of had nine goals for that match!

Riewoldt is going to attract the best defensive backman in each opposition team the Tigers face now, but after a few years of training he’s now got the size and strength to pose a problem for many defenders and can arguable challenge any full-back in the league in a one on one contest.

Given that he’s a young still-developing forward, all it will take is for Pavlich, Brown, or Fev to have a poor game and Jack riewoldt will be right there, ready to kick another bag of goals and take top spot for the 2010 Coleman Medal.

Coleman Medal Betting Value Bets

After the first four rounds of the 2010 AFL season, it’s a good time to check on the leading goal kickers and pick out some Coleman Medal betting tips.

One of the easiest ways I do this is to do a quick comparison of the betting odds for the top 10 goal scorers so far:

So the two clear favourites are Brown and Fevola, and at those short odds they don’t represent too much value (unless you think Jonathan Brown won’t slow down this goalkicking pace, in which case…). And it looks like there’s a few standout bargain bets here.

Matthew Pavlich is second so far and only four goals off the lead, so at $14.00 he’s looking like great value. Pavlich is Fremantle’s main forward target so he’ll always get plenty of the ball inside 50 and plenty of shots at goal. If he stays healthy throughout the season he could stay right up there in the top one or two goalkickers this year.

As far as long-shot value-bets go, Brendan Goddard is hard to look past. Sure he’s primarily a defender, but somehow he’s managed to kick 12 goals already this season (5 last round against Freo!), and with Nick Riewoldt out for much of the season with a hamstring injury, the Saints are going to be sharing the goal scoring around. At the current odds of 300-1 surely Goddard is worth jumping on as an outside chance?

The West Coast Eagles have two accurate forwards this year in Mark Lecras and Josh Kennedy, and both are currently in the top 10 goal scorers list. Lecras has oodles of talent up forward and at the start of the season he was 17-1 for the Coleman. Kennedy this season so far has scored at a remarkable 91% accuracy with 11 goals from 12 shots! With Lecras at $51 and Kennedy at $151 it could be worth placing a bet on either or both of these guys. They might end up cannibalising each other’s scoring shots by sharing the Eagle’s scoring, but then again they might just keep up this form and end up challenging for the Coleman Medal in 2010.

2010 AFL Draws – Will you bet on them?

I was just checking out the AFL Fixture as the season proper starts next week and I noticed how some places also refer to the AFL season fixture as the AFL draw. Which got me thinking about how AFL footy is one of the remaining sports that still allows a match to end in a draw (although when I think about it others still do, like soccer, cricket) and therefore the draw is available as a betting option.

So do you bet on the draw in footy?
Which begs the question, do you ever bet on the draw in your AFL betting? The draw in footy matches is usually offered at pretty good odds, maybe around 50-1, so it’s a tempting bet. In every AFL season there seems to be at least one or two draws. And some team matchups (like Sydney v West Coast) have a history of being really close games, decided by a point or two on a regular basis. So do you single out those games as a possible draw bet?

I’ve also heard about punters trying to take advantage of the tempting odds, backing the draw on every game in every round, with the hope of coming out on top if they can snare a successful bet on two, three, or four draws across the whole AFL season. I don’t think that’s a particularly smart stratgey, but maybe someone can crunch the numbers and see whether that strategy might work out ok.

Michael Tuck Medal – Who will win it in 2010?

I read a good article in the Herald Sun yesterday talking about betting on the 2010 NAB Cup Final and suggesting that because the final is expected to be so close, another AFL Betting option is to have a punt on the Michael Tuck medal.

The Michael Tuck Medal has a brief history, being a fairly new (in AFL history terms) award. Started in 1992, the Michael Tuck Medal has been awarded to the best-and-fairest player in the AFL pre-season grand final. It is named after Michael Tuck, the current AFL games record holder who played 426 senior matches for the Hawthorn Hawks between 1972 and 1991. So it’s pretty much the pre-season version of the Norm Smith medal.

Scanning through the past winners, you’d see that Saints players have won the Michael Tuck medal three times (Nicky Winmar in 1996, Robert Harvey in 2004, Jason Gram in 2008) but no Western Bulldogs player has won the medal before.

So who will take out the Michael Tuck Medal this year? It could be a Bulldogs player for the first time. Either way it’s another chance to get a value bet on tonight’s NAB Cup final.

NAB Cup Final Betting Odds

We’re finally up to the final of the NAB Cup, this weekend the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda will meet in the NAB Cup Final.

Can Brendan Fevola win the 2010 Coleman Medal?

It was only a month ago that the news was reporting how Brendan Fevola was happy as a Brisbane Lion, how quickly they can turn on him. Today the news reporting is all about how Fev is being sued by Lara Bingle for a nude photo he took years ago. In fact so extensive was the national news coverage that even Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard was asked about the issue!

So putting this latest Fevola controversy to one side, the question is can Fev win another Coleman Medal this year?

He certainly has the credentials, winning the Coleman Medal last year, and finishing runner up in the 2008 Coleman Medal (in a year when he kicked 99 goals). And as far as AFL Betting odds go, Fevola is definitely placed with bookies as the favourite to win.

You also have to read Brisbane Lions’ captain Jonathan Brown’s comments about Fev’s chances to kick 100 goals as a sign that Brisbane plan on delivering Fevola plenty of the ball inside the forward 50. Either that or Jonathan Brown is trying to deflect opposition defensive attention onto Fevola, so that he can make his own challenge for the 2010 Coleman Medal.

Either way it’s a tricky bet. Some might see a potentially rejuvenated Brendan Fevola as likely to return to his best goal kicking form, and that might make the current $3.75 on offer at Centrebet, good value.
