After each match of the 22 round season, the three field umpires award 3 points, 2 points and 1 point to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best player on the ground. Any disciplinary action by the tribunal throughout the season is an instant disqualification from the medal. The night of the Brownlow Medal, all votes are counted up and a winner is awarded the medal. Rather than the old count back system in the case of a tie, these days we can have multiple winners.

THE AFL has approached Channel Seven to ensure there is no repeat performance of last year’s Brownlow Medal coverage, which included saturation betting promotion during the Ten Network telecast.

AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the new five-year media agreement ensured the game had won back some control over its official broadcasters regarding the promotion of betting agencies encouraging gambling on football.

“We have addressed that in our next agreement,” said McLachlan. “But it was not an issue as much when we negotiated our existing agreement so we are working with Seven. We agreed generally [Ten's gambling promotions during the 2010 Brownlow] was overdone.”

While the AFL continues to grapple with preserving the game’s integrity, the game’s second-most powerful executive appeared less concerned about the game’s responsibility regarding the promotion of betting.

McLachlan appeared against the tide of many club presidents, politicians and leading commentators when he said: “People bet. It’s a free country. That’s my personal view, but it’s not up to the AFL to legislate against gambling altogether. One problem I see is when the promotion is in your face to the extent it hampers the game or the coverage of the game or an event.

“We will come up with a balanced solution, but exactly what the policy will be has not been decided. The fact is that people bet and wagering will grow regardless of whether or not we are a part of it.

”So this does not mean we will be severing all ties with gambling agencies who have worked with us to ensure our integrity.

“There’s not a consistent view and we’ve still got to get our heads around it.” The AFL has agreements with all registered betting agencies and lucrative sponsorship agreements with Tabcorp and Betfair, agreements it has no intention of ending.

McLachlan appeared lukewarm on the suggestion the AFL should remove the live odds on its website during match broadcasts in which the betting differentials are featured more prominently than the football score. “It’s not a given that it will be stopped,” he said. “We do have agreements in place.”

While the new broadcast contract includes a clause stipulating networks produce a “responsible presentation” of the AFL, Seven’s football boss Lewis Martin said such a clause was already in line with his network’s policy. He guaranteed the 2011 Brownlow count, while partly sponsored by Tabcorp, would not overdo gambling advertising.

“We will ensure our partners are afforded benefits in line with their sponsorship and we fully respect and appreciate their support,” said Martin. “We can also assure our viewers they can look forward to a responsible presentation.”

McLachlan and fellow executive Andrew Dillon will work over the off-season to reduce the overexposure by corporate bookmakers of live odds and general disproportionate coverage, which has become a regular feature at AFL games and throughout the media.

The MCG Trust has guaranteed live-odds will be removed from the scoreboard from next season and it is understood the AFL is encouraging Etihad Stadium follow suit.

And there are a number of big competitors for the honour with claims just as strong as the midfield master.

Firstly, and close to home – witness the similarity between the short priced favourite last year, Dane Swan, and the rise in 2011 of Marc Murphy. Swan was very unlucky to run second last year with 24 votes, when he polled eight two votes, and was elected best on ground only twice. Teammate Scott Pendlebury (21 votes) was named BOG four times.

It is possible that Marc Murphy could steal votes off Judd in a similar manner. Most pundits concede that Murphy is a chance at some sort of vote in more games than the bald leader. If the smooth-moving distributor sneaks a few more three votes than expected, Judd may be running second, not first.

Dean Cox has had a brilliant season, and could easily overturn the recent bias against big men, especially since he is effectively an ‘extra’ midfielder, and there are several other superstars who havee had stellar seasons.

JOHN Worsfold has tipped Chris Judd to become an immortal of the game by winning his third Brownlow Medal on Monday night.
Worsfold, who held the premiership cup aloft with Judd in 2006, guided the Carlton skipper’s AFL career from its infancy in 2002 until he walked out on West Coast after the 2007 season.

Odds-on favourite Judd has eased slightly in the betting over the past few days, but bookmakers are predicting another surge in interest from today and believe he could start the count as short as $1.50.

Sydney star Adam Goodes, another dual Brownlow medallist, has been the best-backed player in recent weeks, shortening from $41 with Player after Round 18 to a $4.75 second-favourite behind Judd.

Judd or Goodes would become the fifth triple-medallists after Hayden Bunton Sr, Dick Reynolds, Ian Stewart and Bob Skilton, who will present the medal to the winner.

The Eagles’ coach picked Judd to win the Brownlow from Goodes and champion West Coast ruckman Dean Cox.

“It’s pretty much an award dominated by midfielders in recent years and Judd and Goodes have had exceptional seasons. Both are proven vote-getters and have certainly been match-winners in 2011,” Worsfold said.

Despite no genuine ruckman winning the award since Footscray’s Scott Wynd in 1992, Worsfold believes Cox is a chance because of his ability to win the ball around the ground.

Cox averaged 18 possessions and 30 hitouts a game despite sharing the ruckwork with Nic Naitanui.

He also kicked 19 goals as he claimed his fifth All-Australian guernsey.

The 30-year-old would become West Coast’s third Brownlow winner after Judd in 2004 and Ben Cousins in 2005, and the first West Australian to claim the medal since Cousins’ triumph six years ago.

“Cox is almost another midfielder and was very consistent for us and played every game,” Worsfold said. “We won 17 qualifying matches, so that should help.”

New Fremantle coach Ross Lyon predicted Judd would be upstaged by his Blues’ teammate Marc Murphy, tipping him to win from Goodes and Cox.

Official AFL statistician Champion Data’s prediction model, which favours midfielders in a bid to replicate the umpires’ thinking, has Judd and Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury tying for the award on 28 votes, ahead of Magpie Dane Swan on 22. Cox is predicted to finish fourth with 19 votes as the highest-polling Eagle, while Fremantle youngster Nat Fyfe is tipped to be the Dockers’ biggest vote-getter with 13.

Though the Champion Data modelling has generally been a reliable guide in recent years, it did not see Judd’s upset win coming last year, predicting him to finish with just 16 votes, half the tally of predicted winner Swan on 32.

Player manager Ben Pomatti said there had been a huge flood of money for Goodes, the medal winner in 2003 and 2006. “I think people have seen his conclusion to the home-and-away season and the form he was in and history says he does poll very well,” Pomatti said.

Judd was paying $1.60 with Player yesterday and had been as short as $1.48 after Round 21, the shortest price for a player ever with three rounds of a season remaining.

Pomatti believed interest in the Brownlow in WA had taken a back seat this week to the Eagles’ preliminary final appearance and expected punters to come again for Judd today and tomorrow.

“We do think there’ll be money for him at the shorts, similar to Dane Swan last year,” he said.

Cox and Matt Priddis have been the best-backed Eagles, while the Dockers’ Brownlow drought appears certain to extend for another year.

At $251, Fyfe is rated the leading contender but any Docker in the mix during the count will struggle to come home because Fremantle lost its last seven games of the season.

“Unless there’s a huge surprise, it looks like the Dockers will have to wait at least another year,” Pomatti said.

“No doubt Fyfe’s had a good season, but it looks very difficult (for him to win the medal).”

What happened at the 2010 Brownlow Medal?

Carlton’s Chris Judd was the runaway winner of the 2010 Brownlow Medal and his victory was somewhat of a shock. Judd missed the first three weeks after carrying over a suspension from the 2009 season but came out with a bang and led polling at the half-way mark after a string of best-on-ground performances. Judd polled 30 votes to beat Gary Ablett on 26 votes with hot favourite Dane Swan on 24. Dane Swan was the shortest priced favourite in many years, going out odds-on after a stellar season but with teammate Scott Pendlebury also polling well Swan was never in contention.

2011 Brownlow Odds
Brownlow Medal betting for 2011 is a hotly contested affair with two-time winner Chris Judd, perennial under-performer (at least according to the umpires) Dane Swan and 2009 winner Gary Ablett at the top of betting. Gary Ablett is looking to become the second player in two years to win the Brownlow Medal at two different clubs. Ablett has moved to the new Gold Coast franchise and will be looking to turn in another stellar season and push the new team into the finals in their first year.

Chris Judd will also be looking to become only the fifth player in AFL history to win three Brownlow Medals.
