I’ve looked at the Brownlow Medal odds a few times throughout the season. At the start of the season I checked out the Brownlow Medal favourites, then in May the overall 2010 Brownlow Odds (and back then Gary Ablett and Chris Judd were clear favourites), oh yeah and in June the AFL quickly covered up the lost Brownlow votes incident, and just a few weeks ago I couldn’t ignore the red-hot form of Collingwood any longer and I posted about Dane Swan’s Brownlow odds.

Well with only Round 22 to go we’re definitely at the business end of the 2010 AFL Season. One last chance for you to jump on who you think has a shot at the brownlow, and who is still being offered at decent odds.

When we posted back in June about whether Jack Riewoldt could win the Coleman Medal, little did we know that with one round to go in the AFL Season, Riewoldt would be sitting on top of the goal kicker’s tally board as the clear favourite.

Right now Riewoldt has 75 goals for the season, followed by Barry Hall with 69 goals. Mark Lecras is third with 62 goals.

As an outside chance Barry Hall is still being offered at $8 for the Coleman Medal. Who knows, can Barry kick 7 goals in round 22 while Jack Riewoldt doesn’t kick any?…

Dane Swan has had an exceptional season, however he didn’t get off to as fast a start as some of the other Brownlow favourites. Back in May when we checked the Brownlow odds, Swan had gone out to $21 and if you’d jumped on him then you’d be feeling pretty good right about now. At that stage of the season Gary Ablett jnr was the clear favourite.

Several months later though and Dane Swan has consistently been one of Collingwood’s best players in just about every match through June and July. During that period the Pies won plenty of games, enough to see them currently top of the ladder. The best players in winning teams are always going to attract brownlow votes so Dane Swan is currently right up there with Gary Ablett as a Brownlow medal favourite.

In fact as of today, Centrebet has Ablett at $6.50 and Swan at $4.50.

It was only last week that I wrote a post titled, Jack Riewoldt for the Coleman Medal looking at reasons why I think Jack Riewoldt can win the Coleman Medal this year. Maybe he was inspired by the post, or maybe he just had a great game. Either way the young Richmond full-forward stunned the AFL world today when he kicked 10 goals against West Coast in the Tiger’s Round 12 match.

Riewoldt had 13 shots on goal but was much more accurate than normal. Admittedly Richmond scored 19 goals in the match so they were well on top of the Eagles. But a 10-goal bag is an awesome effort for any player, in any footy match and Riewoldt now leads the Coleman Medal race with 45 goals so far in the 2010 season, 2 goals ahead of Barry Hall who is currently in second place.

In a huge embarrassment for the AFL, official Brownlow Medal votes from one of the games in Round 8 have gone missing. I posted a summary of the news articles about the lost brownlow votes and today Mike Sheahan and Jon Ralph of the Herald Sun asks more important questions.

In his article Sheahan asks:

How does the fact the AFL can’t locate Brownlow Medal votes from a Round 8 game sit with that familiar image of a dozen gun-toting guards solemnly accompanying a security box to centre stage for the count to decide the champion player of the season?

How, indeed. Maybe the umpires need a security escort from the stadium to AFL House when they transport the envelope with the votes?

How can Brownlow votes be lost, and who purloined them? Or found them? The integrity of the most famous award in Australian sport has been compromised.

According to the AFL the original votes haven’t been found.

Have the umpires faithfully recalled their votes? Did the thief or finder lay bets on the basis of the original votes?

Surely someone will pay dearly for this startling event.

Maybe Adrian Anderson, doesn’t the buck stop with him?

And Jon Ralph in his article asks:

Surely, in a landscape where nothing is forgiven, the AFL couldn’t exonerate its own umpire while penalising one of its own clubs.

The AFL says the case of the lost Brownlow votes is an isolated incident, but what of the worst-case scenario? What if the votes had been from a Round 22 encounter featuring a betting market’s red-hot Gary Ablett?

How much would that knowledge be worth to a corporate bookmaker, especially a climate in which people can bet on top-10 Brownlow results or even the most votes per club?

Former umpire Derek Humphery-Smith believes someone out there has the lost votes.

“If the Brownlow Medal winner came from either of those two teams, and recorded votes in that match, it would be an interesting integrity challenge for the AFL. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last (votes have been lost),” he said.

“I would be very confident it’s happened before. They will turn up somewhere.

“The great risk is people’s ability to bet on so many things. The AFL have tightened their processes really well … but it is amazing this could happen.”
